Vaginal herpes, also known as genital herpes or herpes genitalis, is a viral infection caused by a type of virus known as herpes simplex type 2. There are over a hundred types of herpesviruses and only nine are recognized as infectious among humans and animals. Eight of these types of viruses are being studied extensively. The two most common types of viruses that cause infections in humans are herpes type 1 and type 2. The type 1 causes oral herpes and the type two causes genital or vaginal herpes.
